| The Writers' Studio is author's dream |
| Shauna Morgan - North County Staff | |
The Writers' Studio is a private writing school based in Pleasant Grove that began with one writer's dream. In 2007, Randy Jernigan decided to revisit an idea of pursuing his lifelong dream of owning and operating a writing school. He chose the Utah County location "because of the talent and enthusiasm for writing found here."
He then called Geri Taylor, knowing her writing history and teaching ability would be a great asset to the school. The Writer's Studio was re-established in October 2007 and is recognizing its first anniversary. Jernigan and Taylor are published authors and co-instructors at the school which offers classroom or private instruction geared toward developing and promoting the talents of writers. Guest authors and established writers also give lectures in the classes. The Writer's Studio initially opened in the late 1980s on the second floor of the Continental Plaza in downtown Provo. After a few successful years, the classes were dissolved, and the teaching duo pursued individual writing careers: Taylor began writing a weekly humor column for the Utah County Journal and worked as the Women's Editor for the Utah Adventures Magazine. Jernigan returned to Milton, Fla., where he wrote entertainment news for the Santa Rosa Press Gazette and Star Magazine. Since that time he has written extensively for other magazines including People, London's Daily Mail, In-Touch, Life and Style, Woman's World and the Globe. The classes offered through the studio are structured to provide instruction on dozens of specific topics. Some of which include "Jump Starting your Writing Career," freelance, novel, screen play and children's book writing. In addition to the classroom instruction, The Writer's Studio offers students an opportunity to publish their work through guided networking within the industry. "A lot of other writers' groups focus on just the technical side of writing," Jernigan said. "We focus on assisting people launch a writing career." For example, "EN2GO international with Steve Wazinak (one of the fore founders of Apple computer) has entered into contract with the studio to write press and features about him and his company," Jernigan said. Also the studio is currently in the process of publishing an anthology of short stories, each written by students who have attended classes at the school. Some of the future projects for the school include writers' conferences, workshops and a radio talk show called "Inside the Writer's Studio" on KSRR launching the first week in January. Courses vary in duration from 4-10 weeks depending on which class is offered. The next scheduled class will be a fiction class starting Nov. 20. Registration is the first day of class at the Pleasant Springs Apartment clubhouse, 884 W. 700 South, Pleasant Grove. |

Writer’s Studio of Utah Starts new class enrollment
“I’ve always wanted to write a book, but I don’t know where to start.” These are golden words to instructors Randy Jernigan and Geri Taylor of The Writer’s Studio of Utah, a Pleasant Grove-based writing school now in its third year.
Jernigan has written for numerous magazines including People, London Daily Mail, In-Touch Weekly, Life and Style Weekly, Woman’s World and Globe Magazine, and has several books published. His goal has been to have a writing school that will be a premier venue for all levels of writers, not only in learning or improving skills, but getting published. Jernigan notes: “Most writers’ groups focus on the technical aspect of writing. We are pro-active in assisting students to launch their writing career.”
With years of writing under his belt, Jernigan’s list of contacts is not only impressive, but quite useful. This unassuming writer has interviewed a variety of famous and influential people including Justin Timberlake, Colin Powell, and President Gordon B. Hinckley.
Taylor, a weekly contributor to the Timpanogos Times, was a stringer for The Daily Herald in the late ‘80’s and early ‘90’s and also wrote a humorous column in the Utah County Journal. She was Women’s Editor for the Utah Adventure’s Magazine and wrote numerous human interest articles. During this time Jernigan and Taylor started a successful writing school that met in the Continental Plaza in downtown Provo. Classes were dissolved after several years when the co-instructors moved from Provo.
Twenty years later the two met at church and immediately began discussing the possibility of another writing school. The Writer’s Studio of Utah was created with an emphasis on encouraging writers of all levels and interests to step out of the box and believe in themselves. “Often a writer needs only a friendly nudge and an honest critique of their work to start believing in their possibilities”, says Taylor. “Having the talent is very important, but knowing where and how to put that skill to work is the only way to see your dream come to fruition.”
The six-week class will begin March 31 at the Pleasant Springs clubhouse, 884 W 700 S in Pleasant Grove. Classes will be geared to fiction writing and publishing, but will be adaptable to other genres. For more information on times, fees and curriculum, go to www.thewritersstudio.info .
